Through-Hull or Seacock Corrosion

Corroded through-hulls and seacocks are the #1 sinking cause for boats at the dock. Pink discoloration on bronze means dezincification — the metal is failing.

What to Check

1

Visual inspection (annual)

Pink/copper color on bronze = dezincification. Green crust = surface corrosion. Both need attention.

2

Hammer test

Tap the through-hull with a small hammer. Sound metal rings; corroded metal thuds. Don't tap hard — you can break a failing fitting.

3

Seacock operation

Seacocks must operate easily by hand. Frozen handles will shear off in an emergency.

4

Bonding wire continuity

All underwater metals should be bonded. Missing bonds accelerate galvanic corrosion.

When to Call Us

Any pink-tinted bronze gets replaced — period. We do this in haul-out with proper Marelon or DZR bronze fittings.
