Loose Rudder or Steering Play

Excessive steering play is dangerous and gets worse fast. The fix is usually a worn bearing or hydraulic air — both totally fixable.

What to Check

1

Rudder bearings

Lift the rudder and check play side-to-side and up-and-down. More than 1/8" = worn bearing.

2

Hydraulic air

Spongy steering at the helm = air in the lines. Bleed at the highest point.

3

Cable steering wear

Frayed steering cables make the wheel feel loose. Inspect the entire cable run.

4

Tie bar / quadrant

Sloppy quadrant-to-tiller pin or a bent tie bar between twin rudders.
