Oily Sheen in the Bilge

Oily bilge water is illegal to discharge and signals an engine, transmission, or fuel-system leak. Find the source before the EPA, harbor patrol, or your insurance does.

What to Check

1

Engine oil seal

Front or rear main seals weep oil onto the pan. Wipe clean and run — fresh drips reveal the source.

2

Transmission seal

ATF on the bilge floor + reddish color = transmission seal. Common on older Hurth / ZF gearboxes.

3

Fuel leak

Diesel sheen smells different than oil. Check primary and secondary fuel filters and fittings.

4

Stuffing box / shaft seal

Old packing dripping water + a worn stern tube can mix oil into bilge water.

When to Call Us

We clean up the existing oil with absorbent pads, find the source, and replace the failing seal — usually in a single visit.
