Headsail Furler Stuck or Hard to Roll

A furler that binds is usually a halyard wrap, a seized swivel, or a worn bearing — and the fix gets cheaper if you catch it before the foil bends.

What to Check

1

Halyard wrap

If the halyard wraps around the foil at the masthead, the furler locks up. Common after a halyard-tension change. Look up.

2

Bottom drum bearing

Salt + sun + neglect kills lower bearings. Spin the empty drum by hand — should turn freely.

3

Top swivel

Top swivels seize from corrosion. The sail will twist at the head — go up the rig and inspect.

4

Sun-rotted UV cover

If the sail's leech UV strip is shredding, the sail itself may be wedging in the furler.
